There are various pre- historic and cultural sites to be found in and around Kisumu. Some of the more interesting ones include the following:

Kisumu Museum:
The Kisumu Museum was officially opened to the public in 1980. It is located on the Nairobi/Kisumu Highway about a ¼ of a Kilometer from the main Kisumu Bus Stand . The exhibits on display represent the cultures and natural history of the peoples of the Western Kenya region, whose inhabitants include the Luo, Kuria, Kalenjin, Luhyia, Gusii and Suba.

Impala Park:
The Animal Orphanage is also known as 'The Impala Park' . There are quite a number of wild animals plus a variety of bird species. These include free roaming Impalas, Reedbucks and Vervet Monkeys. Among the caged animals are Leopards, Baboons, Duikers, Tortoise, Sitatunga, the resident Hippo population and the resident monitor lizards. The park also boasts of over 100 different species of birds, some of which are migratory, but of which the great majority are resident. There are also a large number of very old and rare trees and vegetation. The Park has a picnic site which visitors are free to use.

Dunga Beach:
Dunga Beach is situated at lands end , is well worth a visit, because from here there is the spectacular and breath taking view of a large expanse of blue Lake water which stretches into the far horizon, with the distant Homa Hills, shimmering in the background. Dunga is actually a fishing port serving Kisumu and out laying areas with fresh fish. It is quite a spectacular sight to watch the boats coming in to unload their catch of fish, and the scramble amongst the buyers s they haggle for the best price. The giant Mbuta(Nile Perch) is found in abundance here. Some grow up to 6 ft in length and can weigh up to 100 kgs. They have however become a source of worry to fishermen all over the Lake since they prey on the smaller fish including Tilapia one of the main staple diets and sources of protein for people around the Lake region. A walk around the village abounds with opportunities to witness the lifestyle and activities of the people in a typical Luo fishing village including the highly skilled and sadly dying art of traditional boat building

Ndere Island:
This is an exotic Island situated about 20kms from Kisumu. The trip to the Island by boat is an experience visitors will cherish especially during the early morning when the Lake is calm providing an uninterrupted view of the surrounding Lake shore as far as the eye can see. The Island itself is a haven for bird watchers since the variety of birds to be found here is simply amazing.

Thim Lich Ohinga:
This is a dry stone wall enclosure with massive stones piled on top of one another. This complex consisting of six skilfully joined enclosures was built some five centuries ago, when the first communities settled in the Lake region. Since then the wall enclosures (ohinga) have been inhabited by various communities, who have not interfered with the original design or architecture . Thim lich Ohinga is in North East Kedem in Migori District.

Simbi Nyaima:
Simbi Nyaima is a large expanse of water in Homa Bay District approximately 75kms from Kisumu. The myth behind this water mass is quite interesting and is supposed to inculcate the universal values of fairplay and moral responsibility
